Tigers Pull Out 5-4 Win At Ohio Wesleyan
Wittenberg completed an unlikely rally with a pair of three-set singles victories by Kristin Wright and Morgan McDermott.
DELAWARE, Ohio - The Wittenberg women's tennis team came up with a tremendous rally to pick up its first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) West Division victory of the 2012-13 season, a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Ohio Wesleyan.
The match was originally scheduled to be played at Wittenberg's Albright Tennis Complex, but inclement weather forced the teams to square off indoors at Ohio Wesleyan's Gordon Field House. Despite the change in venue, the Tigers' rally improved their record to 5-8 overall and 1-1 in the NCAC West, while Ohio Wesleyan dropped to 2-13 overall and 0-3 in the division.
The Battling Bishops took two of three doubles matches, with only freshman Lexi Garza (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) and sophomore Meghan Depew (Downingtown, Pa./West) pulling an 8-2 win at the No. 3 position.
Garza and DePew then started things off with straight-set wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions. That set the stage for Wittenberg's comeback.
Senior Kristin Wright (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) pulled out a three-set win at No. 1 singles, while freshman Morgan McDermott (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsley School) was rallying for a three-set win at No. 2 singles. In both matches, the Wittenberg player lost the opening set.
