Tigers Finish Fourth In NCAC Tournament
The key match was against Wabash on the tournament's opening day.
GAMBIER, Ohio — The Wittenberg men's tennis team finished fourth in the 2012 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) men's tennis tournament after beating Wabash but losing to Kenyon and DePauw.
The 1-2 record on the weekend moved the Tigers to a final 2011-12 season record of 17-9. Kenyon won its sixth straight NCAC title after beating Denison in the championship match. DePauw finished third after beating the Tigers.
The key match was against Wabash on the tournament's opening day. Thanks to a 5-4 win over the Little Giants during the regular season, Wittenberg was the No. 4 seed over Wabash. The Tigers backed up their seeding with a 5-1 win over Wabash in the first round of the NCAC Tournament.
Sophomore Sam Wilke (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) was a double winner at No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles, where he paired with freshman Alexey Topolyanskiy (Moscow, Russia), who added a win at No. 2 singles. Freshman Sasha Topolyanskiy (Moscow, Russia) was the Tigers' other singles winner after turning in a dominating 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 3. In doubles, he paired with Sasha Topolyanskiy for a win.
Fishkin and Sasha Topolyanskiy provided Wittenberg's lone point in a 5-1 loss to fourth-ranked Kenyon. Then the Tigers were shut out by DePauw, which is ranked 30th nationally and eighth in the Central Region.
