ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The finishing touches to a successful 2011 men's tennis fall season were applied at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region championships, hosted by Washington University.
Fresh off a win over regionally ranked Ohio Northern, the Wittenberg Tigers got the opportunity to face some of the best NCAA Division III competition in the nation. The results were again encouraging, highlighted by two singles wins each from sophomores Tyler Strong (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) and Sam Wilke (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) in the St. Louis Championship Draw.
In the St. Louis Doubles championship, the team of sophomore Joe Marra (Great Falls, Mont./Great Falls) and junior Stuart Zorn (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming)earned a first-round victory, as did the team of junior Sergio Fishkin (Minsk, Belarus) and freshman Alexander Topolyanskiy (Moscow, Russia).
In the ITA Championship bracket, the team of Wilke and freshman Alexander Topolyanskiy (Moscow, Russia) won a first-round match. Alexey Topolyanskiy was a first-round winner in the ITA Championship singles bracket. Also of note was the performance of Strong and freshman Ian Streicker (South Lebanon, Ohio/Loveland), who came back from a first-round loss to win three matches and reach the semifinals of the back draw. Two of their wins came via pro-set tiebreakers before Streicker and Strong bowed out to the eventual back draw champions from Denison.
