Springfield, Ohio — For the 10th time in school history, a Wittenberg volleyball player has earned Sports Imports/Division III National Player of the Week from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). The latest honoree is setter Amy Cox, class of 2010 from Newark, Ohio, who earned the award on Sept. 7 after leading the Tigers to three straight home victories over the weekend.
The Tigers, who moved from No. 11 to No. 7 in the latest AVCA poll, opened the 2010 season with a flourish, defeating preseason No. 8 St. Thomas and No. 14 Wisconsin-Whitewater by matching 3-0 scores before topping California Lutheran 3-1 to claim the Wittenberg National Invitational title. Cox was named Tournament MVP after averaging 10.8 assists per set for the week.
Wittenberg begins the 2010 campaign in its customary position of North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) favorite. The Tigers have won 64 straight NCAC regular season matches and are shooting for their 16th NCAC crown overall and fifth in a row.
Cox, the Tigers' lone senior and a 2009 second-team All-NCAC honoree as a right-side hitter, leads Wittenberg back into action on Friday, Sept. 10, and Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Washington University/ASICS National Invitational in St. Louis, Mo. The Tigers are set to face four teams currently ranked in the top 20 at the event.
Cox is the first Wittenberg player to claim Sports Imports/AVCA Division III Player of the Week honors since Jackie Williams, class of 2009, and Jan Kehres, class of 2008, both were recognized during the 2007 season.
