Tigers Fall To Misericordia In Spring Season Opener
The Wittenberg women’s tennis team ended its long winter break today with a match against Misericordia, and though the Tigers fought fiercely, their opponents emerged victorious by a 7-2 final score.
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Wittenberg women's tennis team ended its long winter break today with a match against Misericordia, and though the Tigers fought fiercely, their opponents emerged victorious by a 7-2 final score.
Wittenberg fell to 2-2 in dual matches on the season with a Noon match versus Wilkes on the schedule for tomorrow, March 6.
The No. 1 doubles combination of senior Kristin Wright (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and freshman Morgan McDermott (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsley School) dropped an 8-5 decision, the first of a Misericordia sweep of doubles action. In second doubles, freshman Jaimie Whaley (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) and sophomore Kaitlin Payne (Carmel, Ind.) fell 8-3, and at No. 3, sophomores Meghan Depew (Downingtown, Pa./West) and Lexi Garza (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) lost 8-2.
The Tigers picked up their two wins in singles action, specifically behind the efforts of McDermott at second singles and Depew at No. 6.
McDermott won the first set against Misericordia's Breanne Phillips by a 6-2 score, but Phillips volleyed with a 6-1 win in the second set. The tiebreaker went McDermott's way by a close 10-8 score.
Depew bested Bossler by scores of 6-1, 6-3. Wright also fought hard at No. 1 singles, taking the first set 6-1 before Michelle Cameron won the second set 6-1 and the tiebreaker 10-5.
