GAMBIER, Ohio — The Wittenberg women's tennis team put the finishing touches on the 2011-12 season with a sixth-place finish in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament.
The Tigers finished with a 12-12 overall record after losing to Kenyon, defeating Wooster and losing to Allegheny. Twelfth-ranked DePauw won the tournament after beating Oberlin in the title match.
Wittenberg earned the No. 5 seed in the tournament based on regular season results, including a 1-2 record in the NCAC West Division. The Tigers opened with a 5-1 loss to host Kenyon (all matches were stopped as soon as the clinching match was completed).
The Tigers' lone win against Kenyon came at No. 4 singles, where junior Kristin Wright (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) was a 6-4, 6-2 victor.
Eighth-seeded Wooster proved no match for the Tigers for the second time in eight days. After winning two of the three doubles matches, Wittenberg clinched the match with singles from sophomore Leah Ann Miller (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central) at No. 1, senior Alex Cummins (New Lebanon, Ohio/Dixie) at No. 2 and freshman Georgia Bennett (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) at No. 3.
Against sixth-seeded Allegheny, the Tigers dropped two of the three doubles matches to dig a hole from which they were unable to emerge. The lone doubles point was provided by the third-court team of senior Maggie Stewart (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat) and senior Jackie Stevens (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) before Bennett was a winner at No. 3 singles and Wright captured the victory at No. 4 singles.
