OBERLIN, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers came up short in their bid for the third seed in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament, losing for just the third time to an NCAA Division III team and the fifth time overall in the 2010-11 season with a 5-3 decision at Oberlin.
The loss left the Tigers with records of 18-5 overall and 3-3 in the NCAC, compared to 11-10 overall and 4-1 for the Yeowomen. Both teams will compete in the NCAC Tournament at Oberlin next weekend.
The Tigers had the momentum coming out of the doubles competition, winning at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. But Wittenberg managed just one singles victory, with senior Jayne Miely (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) winning in straight sets at No. 2. Senior Rachel Bundy (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) was leading at No. 5 singles, but her match was not played to completion since the team decision had already been determined.
Miely and Bundy were winners at No. 3 doubles, while juniors Maggie Stewart (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat) and Anne Beauch (North Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) claimed an 8-5 decision at No. 1 doubles.
