The Wittenberg Tigers may well have won their most significant match yet, topping North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) rival Allegheny in dramatic fashion, 5-4.
OBERLIN, Ohio — In a record-breaking season, the Wittenberg Tigers may well have won their most significant match yet, topping North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) rival Allegheny in dramatic fashion, 5-4.
The win moved the Tigers to 18-4 overall on the 2010-11 season, compared to 10-8 for the Gators. More importantly, Wittenberg is now 3-2 in the NCAC regular season, while Allegheny dropped to 1-4.
After the Tigers won two of three doubles matches, the Gators rallied to win three of the first five singles matches to knot the score at 4-4. That's when freshman Leah Ann Miller (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central) stepped up to claim victory at No. 1 singles by virture of a taut 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 decision.
Miller also won at No. 2 doubles with freshman Emma Bilyeu (Terre Haute, Ind./Vigo), while seniors Jayne Miely (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) andRachel Bundy (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) pulled off an improbable 9-8 win at No. 3 doubles. Miely and Bundy won the tiebreaker 7-5.
Miely also was a winner at No. 2 singles, clinching the victory with another 7-5 tiebreaker victory in the second set. Sophomore Kristin Wright (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) rounded out the Tigers' list of individual winners with a straight-set victory at No. 6 singles.
The Tigers close the regular season with another key NCAC match on Easter Sunday against Oberlin. A win over the Yeowomen would likely clinch the all-important No. 3 seed in next week's NCAC Tournament, also hosted by Oberlin.
