GAMBIER, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers continued to build momentum for the conclusion of the 2010-11 season, splitting a pair of matches played at Kenyon. The Tigers fell 7-2 against perennial powerhouse Kenyon in the day's first match but recovered nicely to post a 7-2 win of their own against Wooster.
The split left the Tigers with records of 16-4 overall and 2-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). Wittenberg wraps up the non-conference portion of the schedule at home against Capital on Wednesday, April 20, before hitting the road next weekend for key NCAC matches at Allegheny and Oberlin.
Against Kenyon, the Tigers started strong with two doubles wins as freshmen Leah Ann Miller (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central) and Emma Bilyeu (Terre Haute, Ind./Vigo) teamed at No. 2 and seniors Jayne Miely (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Rachel Bundy (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) combined at No. 3. But Kenyon swept the singles competition.
Against Wooster, all three Tiger doubles teams were winners, setting the stage for a juggled singles line-up to win four of six matches. Miller was a victor at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles with Bilyeu, while juniors Anne Beauch (North Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) and Maggie Stewart (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat)were also double-winners in the match. They combined at No. 1 doubles and then Beauch won at No. 2 singles and Stewart won at the No. 3 position.
