SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers kicked off a promising 2007-08 women's tennis season in style Thursday with a come-from-behind 5-4 win over NAIA scholarship foe Ohio Dominican.
After winning two of three doubles matches to get things started, the Tigers dropped three of the first four singles matches to put themselves in a hole. That's when sophomores Emily Nash (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) andMarisa Pechawer (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central) rose to the occasion, winning decisive three-setters at No. 5 and 6 singles respectively. Nash was the last one to finish, giving the Tigers an exciting win.
Pechawar was Wittenberg's lone double-winner on the afternoon as she added an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles with junior Kat Sundstrom (Trafalgar, Ind./North Central). Wittenberg's other wins were provided by junior Allison Earhart (Yorktown, Ind./) at No. 1 singles and the freshman doubles tandem of Jayne Miely (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Elizabeth Micheletti (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) at the No. 1 position.
The Tigers put the wraps on the fall season with a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) match against Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday. Wittenberg placed fifth in the NCAC a year ago.
