SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Wittenberg University will host one of 61Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championship Tournaments played across the country over the last three weeks of September. Wittenberg will host the NCAA Division III Central Region Women’s Tournament Sept. 29-Oct. 2 at the David B. and Georgiana S. Albright Tennis Complex.
The Wilson/ITA Central Region Championship is one of eight regional tournaments for Division III women taking place across the country over a two-week span. The singles and doubles champions from this weekend’s tournament advance to the ITA National Small College Championships at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Fla., schedule for Oct. 12-15. In 2002, Wittenberg’s Casey Clagett won the men’s Central Region title and advanced to the national championships, an accomplishment that eventually earned him All-America status.
The 2006 Wilson/ITA Central Region Women’s Championships features another outstanding field. Wittenberg, under the direction of first-year Head Coach Pablo Russo, has eight players off a very young team entered in the tournament. The Tigers’ top returning letterwinner is Allison Earhart, class of 2009 from Muncie, Ind., who compiled a 14-9 singles record a year ago while playing primarily in the No. 5 position. She will be competing against players from some of the top-ranked teams in the nation, including North Coast Athletic Conference rivals Kenyon and Denison, Washington University and DePauw.
The Wilson/ITA National Small College Championships began in 1986 and annually crowns men’s and women’s singles and doubles national champions in NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges. As the governing body and coaches association of collegiate tennis, the ITA promotes both the athletic and academic achievements of the collegiate tennis community. The ITA, which was founded in 1956 and is based in Skillman, N.J., administers numerous regional and national championships, the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit, presented by the USTA, as well as official rankings for men’s and women’s tennis at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior College levels.
