SPRINGFIELD, OH - Wittenberg Women's Soccer headed into the 2025 regular season finale with a fairly straight-forward task - win and in. The Tigers were among six teams bunched near the top of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) standings, making the home game against John Carroll a must-win to reach the four-team NCAC Tournament.
It was not to be, however. John Carroll took advantage of its two best scoring opportunities as the Blue Streaks converted once in each half to secure a 2-0 victory and first place in the NCAC regular season standings with 15 points. John Carroll will open the NCAC Tournament by hosting fourth-seeded Kenyon, while Denison and DePauw will square off in the other semifinal.
For Wittenberg, the loss dropped the Tigers to 6-3-7 overall and 2-2-3 in the NCAC, good for nine points and sixth place in the final standings. Wittenberg finished the season winless in its last five games with two losses and three ties.
The final stats reflect a very evenly played game against John Carroll. The Blue Streaks held a 7-4 advantage in shots in the first half, but Wittenberg finished with a commanding 8-3 lead in shots in the second half to finish at 12-10 overall. The Tigers were also awarded eight corner kicks, compared to two for John Carroll.
The difference in the game was the play of John Carroll goalkeeper Madeline Martin, who recorded seven saves. In the first half, she managed to parry a header off the goal line after an excellent corner kick from Wittenberg's Alex Hill (Powell, OH / Olentangy Liberty). In the second half, Martin saved a shot by Wittenberg's Sarah Deaton (Monroe, OH / Monroe) that was ticketed for the far post, and she followed that with a save on a penalty kick.
Rachel Spencer (Columbus, OH / Bishop Watterson) led the way offensively for Wittenberg with four shots, including three on target. Deaton added three shots.
In goal, Lily Winkle (Cynthiana, KY / Harrison County) was credited with five saves in the game.
