Wittenberg Women’s Soccer Battle With Ohio Wesleyan Ends in Draw
Springfield, OH – Sitting pretty in the second period, it looked like Wittenberg's women's soccer team was going to put another 'W' in the books. However, Ohio Wesleyan had other thoughts in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) battle Saturday night, Oct. 11, under the lights at Edwards-Maurer Field.
Up 2-0 with just over 30 minutes left to play, Wittenberg couldn't stave off a tough offensive attack by the Bishops, only to see its lead turn into a 2-2 draw.
Ohio Wesleyan scored its first goal at the 53:17 mark of the second half, less than two minutes after Wittenberg had extended its lead to 2-0, and then hit No. 2 on a free kick from just outside the penalty area a little more than four minutes later to knot things up and secure a tie against the Tigers. Caroline Stupp (Waynesville, OH / Waynesville) tried to break the tie on a high right shot with just over five minutes remaining, but the Ohio Wesleyan goalkeeper was able to make the save.
Alex Hill (Powell, OH / Olentangy Liberty) had a great night for the Tigers, scoring both of their goals. Her first was a high right shot past the goalie just 16 seconds into the game off an assist by Courtney Lindgren (Maineville, OH / Kings). Her second goal came in the second period at the 51:56 mark and was a low center score off a brilliant assist by Sarah Deaton (Monroe, OH / Monroe).
With the tie, Wittenberg goes to 6-1-5 overall and 2-0-1 in the NCAC standings, good for seven points and a narrow lead over John Carroll. Ohio Wesleyan goes to 3-4-6 overall and 0-0-2 in the NCAC.
