Springfield, OH-The Tiger women's soccer team put together a second half comeback against the visiting Transylvania Pioneers at Edwards-Maurer Field to pull out a very entertaining 2-1 win.
The win improved Wittenberg's record to 3-1-3, while the Pioneers fell to 0-5-1. After starting the season with a tie against Marietta and a loss to Carnegie Mellon on the season's opening weekend, the Tigers have gone five games without a loss (3-0-2).
The Pioneers lit up the scoreboard quickly, as Transylvania found the back of the net only five minutes into the game to take an early 1-0 lead. The Wittenberg defense stepped up from that point to hold the Pioneers scoreless for the rest of the first half. Wittenberg's offense produced seven corner kicks and 10 shots in the first half, but the 1-0 Transylvania lead held up through halftime.
After the half, the Tigers gained momentum. The Tigers' goal leader, Sarah Deaton (Monroe, OH / Monroe), tied the game after an assist off the foot of senior Olivia Kuhner (Winston Salem, NC / RJ Reynolds). When all signs pointed to a draw, Kylie Hornbeck (South Lebanon, OH / Kings) stepped up and found the back of the net after getting an assist from a corner kick of freshman Biz Stallard (Troy, OH / Tippecanoe) in order to complete the comeback win.
Team Leaders
- Deaton led the team with four shots, with two coming on goal. Caroline Stupp (Waynesville, OH / Waynesville) put two on frame as well.
Team Comparison
- The Tigers logged 17 shots, nine corner kicks, committed two fouls, and made one save.
- The Pioneers had only six shots, one corner, also committed two fouls, and made seven saves.
Next up, the Tigers play an away game at Franklin on Saturday, September 20th at 2:00 PM as they look to extend their unbeaten streak.
