Wittenberg Surprises Allegheny In Road Win
In a season of landmark victories (and ties), the youthful Wittenberg Tigers picked up another stunner on Saturday, capturing a 1-0 overtime win at Allegheny. The win improved the Tigers, who have had just one winning season since 1995, to 7-0-4 overall and 2-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
MEADVILLE, Pa. - In a season of landmark victories (and ties), the youthful Wittenberg Tigers picked up another stunner on Saturday, capturing a 1-0 overtime win at Allegheny. The win improved the Tigers, who have had just one winning season since 1995, to 7-0-4 overall and 2-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
For the second straight Saturday, the Tigers picked up a crucial NCAC road victory. Last week, freshman Lisa Rusch scored a goal late in the second half to upend defending NCAC regular season champion Wooster. This week, it was sophomore Liz Volz with a goal in the second overtime period that broke a scoreless tie and gave the Tigers the win.
Volz' goal was described by Head Coach Norm Riker as "one of the best shots I have ever seen." It was a "laser" from the top of the penalty box that nestled into the top of the Allegheny goal, and it was a score that continued the Tigers' dream season that is now one game short of being guaranteed as a winning one.
Freshman goalkeeper Meghan O'Rourke was stellar in net again, stopping two Allegheny shots on goal. Wittenberg outshot its hosts 11-8 in the game, and the Tigers earned four corner kick opportunities to one for the Gators, an NCAC Tournament participant the last three years.
