Tigers Celebrate Seniors With 18-9 Swamping Of Gators
Wittenberg dominates in first half and coasts to victory after Senior Recognition Day ceremonies that honored four veteran Tigers.
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - A hot start gave the Wittenberg Tigers all the momentum they would need in an 18-9 Senior Recognition Day victory over Allegheny.
The win moved the Tigers to 9-3 overall and 6-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). It was Wittenberg's 28th consecutive NCAC regular season victory. Allegheny dropped to 5-9 overall and 2-4 in the league.
Before the game, the senior quartet of Beth Hubbard (West Hartford, Conn./Notre Dame de Sion (Mo.)), Megan Loofbourrow (Prospect, Ky./Ballard), Logan Warye (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) and Mary Ann White (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) were honored for their career achievements. The Tigers responded by putting together a solid performance that further bolstered the seniors' ground-breaking career achievements.
Warye started the first-half barrage with a goal just 13 seconds into the game. After Warye scored her fifth goal of the first half with just one second remaining, the Tigers owned a commanding 13-2 lead. The Gators could get no closer than seven in the second half.
Wittenberg held a 35-25 advantage in shots, including a dominating 24-11 edge in the first half alone. The Tigers picked up nine more ground balls and won 10 more draw controls in the game.
Individually, Warye finished with six goals and two assists, in addition to five ground balls, nine draw controls and three caused turnovers in a spectacular all-around performance. Sophomore Becca Joseph (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula) added four goals and one assist, Loofbourrow contributed three goals and one assist, and junior Carrie Kubasta (Medina, Ohio/Medina) had three goals.
Loofbourrow, Hubbard and Kubasta each picked up four ground balls, and Kubasta matched Warye with nine draw controls. Loofbourrow matched Warye with three caused turnovers in the game.
In goal, junior Katie Reuter (Cleveland, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) was credited with seven saves before giving way to freshman Faith Mahnke (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), who made four saves in the final 19:35.
