SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - There would be no David slaying Goliath in this one. The Wittenberg Tigers were overwhelmed from the start as Division I University of California-Davis muscled their way to an 18-0 victory at Edwards-Maurer Field.
Wittenberg fell to 2-8 on the season, while UC-Davis headed back to the west coast with a record of 7-7. The Tigers return to action at home on Saturday, April 21 at 10:30 a.m. against conference rival Ohio Wesleyan. It will be the Red and White's final regular-season home game of the year.
The Aggies of UC-Davis, who played at Ohio State two days earlier, finished off their Midwest swing at Wittenberg with a dominating offensive attack. They outshot the Tigers 28-5 on their way to 18 goals. Wittenberg, though, did show a determined resilience in the midfield as they won the battle for ground balls, 10-8, and were narrowly outpaced in draw controls.
The Tiger offensive charge was held in check for most of the first half, but a strong second period effort produced four shots on goal, including two by senior Melissa Jackson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington). Sophomore Hannah Cupples (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) was credited with three draw controls.
Defensively, sophomore Beth Vonderbrink (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) put together a solid game, picking up four ground balls and causing four turnovers. Freshman Bonnie Kenney (Lutherville, Md./Park School) added a game-best seven saves.
