Wittenberg Defeats Oberlin With Late Goal
Rarely has a young team needed a win more than the Wittenberg Tigers did Saturday. Playing in rain and snow, high winds and wintry temperatures, the Tigers came up with the goods for the first time in a 2005 North Coast Athletic Conference game, defeating the Yeowomen, 5-4.
OBERLIN, Ohio - Rarely has a young team needed a win more than the Wittenberg Tigers did Saturday. Playing in rain and snow, high winds and wintry temperatures, the Tigers came up with the goods for the first time in a 2005 North Coast Athletic Conference game, defeating the Yeowomen, 5-4.
The win improved the Tigers to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the NCAC, and it broke a four-game losing streak. Oberlin dropped to 2-10 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
The game-winning goal came at the 49:39 minute mark as freshman Emine Cirpili found the back of the net for the first time. That followed two straight goals by Oberlin that had wiped out a 4-2 Wittenberg advantage.
Goal-scorers for the Tigers were Cirpili, freshman Amber Cupples, sophomore Melissa Jackson and two from sophomore Kari Thomas. No assists were credited to the Tigers, who picked up a solid game from sophomore Clare Bucheit, who made her return for a full game in goal for the first time in three games due to injury. She finished with six saves.
