Women's Lacrosse's Romanowski Breaks School Record for Career Goals

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Wittenberg University senior women's lacrosse standout Cara Romanowski had the kind of record-breaking week most athletes can only dream about. In three games last week, Romanowski scored 20 goals while leading the Tigers to three victories, including two in the North Coast Athletic Conference that moved the team into sole possession of third place heading into the postseason tournament May 2-3.

Romanowski scored seven goals against Kenyon College on Wednesday, April 23, seven goals at Medaille College on Saturday, April 26 and six goals against Allegheny College on Sunday, April 27. Wittenberg defeated Kenyon 17-10, Medaille 16-2 and Allegheny 12-6 to move to 7-5 overall and 5-2 in the NCAC after starting the 2003 season 0-4.

While Romanowski was focused upon team accomplishments and winning individual games, she also made a significant impression upon both the Wittenberg and NCAC record books last week. In the victory over Allegheny, Romanowski moved into first place on the Wittenberg career goals scored list with 168, bettering the 164 scored by Jodi Bennyhoff, who played for the Tigers from 1987-90. In addition, she moved into fifth place on the NCAC career goals list, surpassing Elizabeth Barry of Oberlin, who had 164 from 1994-97.

"Cara is an outstanding student athlete. Her leadership, poise and determination are evident every time she steps on the playing field," said Nancy Beck, Wittenberg head women's lacrosse coach. "She has been an impact player on our team and in our league for the last four seasons who deserves every ounce of recognition she receives."

Romanowski, the 2002 NCAC Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team regional All-America selection a year ago after leading the conference in scoring and goals, has 50 goals this season and has scored at least two goals in every game. With at least two games remaining in the 2003 season, Romanowski is now taking aim at another school record. This one is goals in a season (57), a mark currently held by Jo-El Miller in 1996.

Romanowski is a biology major who has excelled in both field hockey and lacrosse at Wittenberg, earning seven varsity letters and All-NCAC honors in both sports. In addition, the Collegeville, Pa. native and Perkiomen Valley High School graduate is on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and served as president of Delta Gamma Sorority.
