Tigers Earn First Place In Shortened Mount Union Invitational
Forced to head for home early due to approaching weather, Wittenberg was credited with the tourney title after one round.
ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Wittenberg Tigers put together a dominant opening round at the Mount Spring Invitational, and it wound up good enough for a tournament championship.
The tournament was shortened to one round because Wittenberg's team left Northeast Ohio before the second round to beat the approaching snowstorm. The other eight teams in the field remained in Alliance for a second one-round tournament, this one named the Purple Raider Classic, on Sunday.
Playing in unseasonably cold but otherwise sunny weather conditions, the Tigers looped the par-72, 6145-yard course at Tannenhauf Golf Club in 326 as a team, the 10th-best score in program history. That put Wittenberg 10 strokes clear of second-place Baldwin-Wallace in the nine-team field.
Six of the seven Wittenberg players competing in the event placed in the top 13 out of 56 entrants. The leader was sophomore Carolyn Wong (Naperville, Ill./Central), who finished with a 78 to claim medalist honors by three strokes.
Second place went to freshman Allie Lawwill (Springboro, Ohio/Middletown), who carded an 81. Next up was freshman Maggie Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) with an 83, good for a third-place tie, followed by sophomore Nicole Waers (Canton, Ohio/Perry) in seventh place with an 84 and junior Deanna Mychalishyn (Mason, Ohio/Mason) in 13th place with an 86. She was joined in that position by senior Miranda Pettit (Crawfordsville, Ind./North Montgomery), who was playing as an individual.
