Tigers Finish Second At DePauw Small College Classic
Wittenberg posts best team score on second day to pull within seven strokes in the final standings of nationally ranked host DePauw.
CLAYTON, Ind. – The Wittenberg women's golf team continued its strong early season run with a second-place finish at the DePauw Small College Classic.
The Tigers made up six strokes on Day 2 of the competition, but the rally wasn't enough to overcome host DePauw, which won the tournament with a two-day total of 662. DePauw, the 2012 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) champion, carded scores of 329 and 333 on the par-72, 5803-yard Deer Creek Golf Club.
Wittenberg trailed by 13 strokes after the first day before rallying to card a 327 in the second round, tops in the 11-team field. The Tigers trailed DePauw by seven strokes in the final standings, but they stood comfortably ahead of Hanover in third with a 693 and Denison in fourth with a 694.
Individually, Wittenberg was led by freshman Maggie Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore), who scored rounds of 87 and 79 to finish fifth with a 166. Sophomore Carolyn Wong (Naperville, Ill./Central) placed seventh with a 168, followed by freshman Allie Lawwill (Springboro, Ohio/Middletown) in ninth with a 169, sophomore Rachel Steiner (Hamilton, Ohio/Lakota West) in 10th with a 170 and sophomore Nicole Waers (Canton, Ohio/Perry) in 12th with a 171.
Also of note was the play of junior Deanna Mychalishyn (Mason, Ohio/Mason), who posted a two-day total of 166 to tie for fifth place while playing as an individual. Senior Miranda Pettit (Crawfordsville, Ind./North Montgomery) placed 23rd with a 179 and sophomore Savannah Fox (Massillon, Ohio/Perry) rounded out the Tigers in the 70-player field with 32nd-place finish. Of note, Fox improved her score 18 strokes in the second round to a collegiate-best 84 on Day 2.
