Springfield, Ohio — Sarah Watson, class of 2012 from Hudson, Ohio, has trained service dogs, given campus tours, maintained an exemplary grade point average and participated in community service projects on two different continents since arriving at Wittenberg University in 2008. She also proved herself to be one of the finest women's basketball players in program history.
In recognition of her athletic and academic achievements, in addition to her consistent sportsmanship on the court and citizenship away from it, Watson was nominated for the 2012 Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup, presented by Athletes for a Better World. Watson was one of just three NCAA Division III student-athletes to make the list of 22 collegiate semifinalists.
The fact that Watson was not one of the five collegiate finalists invited to the awards banquet on April 25 in Atlanta does nothing to diminish her achievements over the last four years, according to Wittenberg Women's Basketball Head Coach Sarah Jurewicz.
"I have seen such growth and maturation over the last four years in Sarah, and she has always been such a joy to have as a member of our program," Jurewicz said. "I am so proud of her achievements. It speaks volumes about her as a person that she would even be considered for this honor."
Watson earned her second straight second-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) designation in 2011-12 after leading the Tigers with 13.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. She also led the team in blocked shots, while ranking second in both steals and assists as Wittenberg finished 14-12 overall and 9-7 in the NCAC, good for fifth place.
Watson scored 1,069 points in her collegiate career, good for eighth place in program history. She also snared 565 rebounds, which puts her 10th in program history. She was recently selected to participate in the fourth annual Jump25.com/Ohio College All-Star Classic on Saturday, April 14, at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, Ohio.
