MEADVILLE, Pa. — The Wittenberg softball team charged into their 2011 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) slate with a sweep of host Allegheny on Saturday. The Tigers won by scores of 4-1 and 5-0 to improve to 8-13 overall.
Freshman Caitlin Gowins (Coshocton, Ohio/River View) pitched the Tigers to the early win by scattering eight hits with two strikeouts in a complete game. The Tiger bats came alive, to post runs in the second, third and seventh innings.
Freshman Laura Rose (Riverside, Ohio/Stebbins) started her 2-for-3 game out with a triple to lead off a one-run second inning, scoring on a grounder by junior Fallon White (Fairborn, Ohio/Northmont). The Tigers added two more in the next inning on a throwing error to score Gowins and a double steal that sent Rose home.
In the seventh, freshman Kaitie Harrison (Springfield, Ohio/Kenton Ridge) brought junior Jessica Snyder (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) across on a sacrifice fly to round out the scoring. Snyder led the offense with a 3-for-4 game, while junior Brooklyn Cox (Dayton, Ohio/Vandalia Butler) and freshman Shelby Ross (Springfield, Ohio/Kenton Ridge) also added hits.
In Game 2, Wittenberg scored two runs in the second and three in the third while freshman Rachel Ross (Westerville, Ohio/South) tossed her ninth complete game and improved to 5-5 on the season with a two-hit shutout.
Davis sent a two-run single to left field in the second and Harrison cleared the loaded bases with a third-inning single, as the Tigers scored all five runs thanks to two hits. They were two of six total for the lineup, including one each for Rose, Shelby Ross and senior Jessi Allen (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley).
Harrison finished the day with four total RBIs, while seven different Tigers had at least one hit, including four with multiple hits and four with extra base hits.
