KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Wittenberg Tigers dropped to 2-8 on their season-opening Spring Break trip after falling to Marietta 9-3 and nationally ranked Coast Guard 1-0.
Against Marietta, the Tigers fell behind 3-0 in the first inning but rallied to tie the game in the top of the second. However, the Pioneers added two runs in the bottom of the second inning and put the game out of reach with two-spots in the fifth and sixth frames.
Freshman Laura Rose (Riverside, Ohio/Stebbins) had two runs batted in, while freshman Kaitie Harrison (Springfield, Ohio/Kenton Ridge), junior Jessica Snyder (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) and junior Brooklyn Cox (Dayton, Ohio/Vandalia Butler) each scored one run in the game.
Against Coast Guard, Wittenberg's offense was stifled by Hayley Feindel, who has pitched and won all eight of the team's games so far in 2011. The Tigers were limited to just two hits in the game, both singles, and 13 times Wittenberg hitters were sent back to the dugout after striking out.
Junior Anna Kvartunas (Springfield, Va./Paul IV Catholic) was the hard-luck loser after turning in perhaps her finest collegiate performance. She went the distance, allowing just four hits and two walks. But Coast Guard, which also did not have an extra-base hit in the game, scratched out a run in the sixth inning, which was plenty for Feindel.
The Tigers will close out the Spring Break trip with a game against Marietta at 1 p.m. Saturday. This game was not originally on the schedule, but the teams agreed to play after Thursday's entire Rebel Spring Games schedule was rained out.
