Tigers Compete Well At ITA Central Region Championships
Stas Pakhomov and Sasha Topolyanskiy defeated seeded singles opponents to highlight a strong performance at the annual fall championship tournament, hosted in 2012 by Wabash.
CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - Two Tigers upset seeded players to highlight a strong Wittenberg performance in the men's Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Championship hosted by Wabash College.
Eight different Wittenberg players won at least one match in either singles or doubles over the weekend. The highlights were many, starting with a run to the semifinals of the back draw in the singles A bracket by sophomore Ian Streicker (South Lebanon, Ohio/Loveland). He bounced back from an opening round defeat to win four straight matches before losing to the eventual back draw champion.
Freshman Stas Pakhomov (Richmond, British Columbia) made his mark in the singles A bracket in the main draw, upsetting the 26th seed before retiring due to injury in the ensuing match. In addition, sophomore Sasha Topolyanskiy (Moscow, Russia) pulled off a straight-set victory over the 30th see in the singles A bracket before losing in the second round.
In doubles, the highlight was provided by the junior tandem of Sam Wilke (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) and Tyler Strong (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual). They advanced all the way to the quarterfinals of the B flight.
The solid finish in the tournament put the finishing touches on the fall season for the Tigers, who are 4-0 in head-to-head team competition.
