GRANVILLE, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers put the finishing touches on the 2009-10 season with a sixth-place finish in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) championship tournament, hosted by Denison.
The Tigers lost to Allegheny, bounced back for a narrow 5-4 win over Oberlin but then lost to Ohio Wesleyan to conclude the two-day tournament. Wittenberg finished the campaign with a 12-11 overall record.
Against Allegheny, the No. 2 seed from the East Division, the Tigers two of three doubles matches to dig an early hole. Then the Gators picked up wins in the first three singles matches to be completed, ending the match. Wittenberg, the No. 3 seed from the West Division, got its lone win from the No. 2 doubles tandem of sophomore Stephane Antwi (Rosedale, NY/Monsignor McClancy) and senior Craig Lods (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe).
Against Oberlin the next morning, the Tigers again fell behind 2-1 in the doubles but this time they rallied to win four of six singles matches, collecting victories from junior Bobby Fisher (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln), Lods, senior Rob Lehner (Westerville, Ohio/DeSales) and junior Andy Lamb (Bluffton, Ohio/Bluffton) at the Nos. 3-6 positions, respectively.
The season on a down note, however, as the Tigers lost to Ohio Wesleyan, a team they had defeated earlier in the season. Playing shorthanded, Wittenberg managed just one win in doubles, from Antwi and Lods at the No. 1 position this time, and then a singles win from Fisher at No. 2.
