OBERLIN, OH - Wittenberg Men's Soccer didn't get the three points against host Oberlin that the Tigers had hoped for, but a late goal by Cameron Corey (Lancaster, OH / Amanda-Clearcreek) did salvage a 2-2 tie and earned a much-needed point.
The tie snapped a two-game skid for the Tigers, who are now 7-2-4 overall and 0-2-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). Oberlin is now 4-8-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the conference.
Wittenberg took an early lead in this one as Brendon Raggiunti (Brampton, Ontario / Notre Dame Catholic Secondary) scored in the eighth minute. That lead held up through halftime as the Tigers dominated possession and the scoring opportunities to the tune of 11-3 in shots.
Things changed suddenly at the 70-minute mark of the second half when Asher Donahue (Muncie, IN / Burris Laboratory School) was fouled by Oberlin's goalkeeper after he got behind the Yeomen defenders. The goalkeeper, Lukas Verling, was issued a yellow card on the play, but Wittenberg's Kyler Hagstrom (West Chester, OH / Lakota West) picked up a red card for dissent. Now shorthanded, the Tigers gave up two goals in the next 10 minutes.
That's when Corey came up with his fourth goal of the season to tie the game with just 3:24 left in the game.
For the game, Wittenberg held a 16-7 advantage in shots, while the two teams split eight corner kick opportunities down the middle. Verling was credited with seven saves in the game, compared to three for Wittenberg's Aidan Rice (Dublin, OH / Saint Charles).
Raggiunti and Collin LaVeck (Carroll, OH / Bloom-Carroll) led the way for Wittenberg with three shots apiece. Donahue added two attempts on goal.
