RICHMOND, IN – Wittenberg men's soccer placed another 'W' in the win column, capturing a 2-0 victory over Earlham at Matlack-Messer Soccer Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 16.
After a scoreless first half, Wittenberg came alive to strike for two goals late in the game while holding the Quakers scoreless to secure the shutout – the Tigers' third of the season.
Wittenberg had its chances in the first half, taking 15 shots, three on goal, but couldn't break in. The Tigers took fewer shots, 12 in the second half, six on goal, but made good use of their chances with a pair of freshmen getting in on the scoring action for the win.
Striking first to break the 0-0 tie was Konnor Gribbins (Columbus, IN / Columbus North) on a low shot in the center of the net just over 58 minutes into the game off an assist by senior Christopher Meyer (Toledo, OH / St. Francis). Ian Sergent (Versailles, Kentucky / Woodford County) hit for the second one with a low shot to the right unassisted for the goal at the 86:10 mark of the game. He led the team in shots with seven total, two on goal.
Wittenberg took a total of 27 shots on the day to just five for Earlham. It was the fourth win of the season for the Tigers, now 4-0-2, equaling the number of wins they tallied all of last season. With the loss, Earlham drops to 1-4-1 on the year. Wittenberg is now 25-12-2 in the series vs. the Quakers.
