CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers got a late goal from sophomore Josh McErlean (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South) to secure a 3-2 road win over the Mount St. Joseph Lions and improve to 2-3-2 on the season.
The win came at the start of a challenging three-game road swing for the week, which continues with a road trip to Wisconsin on Saturday and Sunday for games against Carthage and Wisconsin-Whitewater. After a home date against Bluffton on Tuesday, Sept. 22, the North Coast Athletic Conference schedule gets underway with a trip to nationally ranked Kenyon on Saturday, Sept. 26.
The Tigers scored the only goal of the first half as freshman Christian Randazzo (Dover, Ohio/Dover) tallied off a feed from sophomore Nick Foley (Fishers, Ind./Cathedral) in the 31st minute. However, Mount St. Joseph started a scoring frenzy 3:09 into the second half.
Wittenberg answered on a goal by freshman Alberto Zaragoza (New Carlisle, Ohio/Tecumseh) in the 69th minute, but once again Mount St. Joseph came up with the equalizer, this time just 4:34 later.
That set up McErlean's late heroics. The assist on the game-winning play was credited to junior Patrick Szymczak (Westerville, Ohio/South).
Wittenberg led in shots by a 15-5 margin, and the Tigers were awarded seven corner kicks to four for the Lions. In goal, freshman Jack Snider (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) made two saves.
