WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers came from two goals down to beat Berea 4-3 and pick up the first victory in Brenton Dawson's collegiate head coaching career.
The win came on opening night of Wilmington's annual Kiwanis Classic. The Tigers, who improved to 1-2-2 on the season, will wrap up action in the event at 3:30 p.m. Sunday against the host Quakers.
Dawson, who has served three seasons as an assistant coach at Wittenberg under his father Steve, saw his team fall behind 2-0 in the first 17 minutes. The Tigers came roaring back, however, starting with a goal from freshman Alberto Zaragoza (New Carlisle, Ohio/Tecumseh) in the 28th minute. Just 34 seconds later, sophomore Josh McErlean (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South) tied the game with a penalty kick.
Seven minutes into the second half, Wittenberg took its first lead of the game as sophomore Alberto Gonzalez (New Carlisle, Ohio/Tecumseh) scored his first goal of the season. After Berea tied the game again in the 64th minute, junior Patrick Szymczak (Westerville, Ohio/South) netted the game-winner in the 66th minute.
All four Wittenberg goals were recorded as unassisted.
Wittenberg was credited with 22 shots in the game, compared to six for Berea.
