Ohio Northern Overcomes Tiger Challenge With Second-Half Goals

Wittenberg led at the half after scoring on its only shot, but the Polar Bears tallied twice in the final 45 minutes to collect the victory.

ADA, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers might have been on the defensive throughout the first half, but they held a 1-0 advantage thanks to a goal on their lone shot on goal. The pressure finally got to the Tigers, however, as Ohio Northern broke through for a pair of tallies in the second half to secure a 2-1 victory.

The loss dropped Wittenberg to 0-2-2 on the season, while Ohio Northern improved to 3-1-0. No rest for the weary ahead, however, as the Tigers head to Wilmington for a pair of games over the weekend.

Wittenberg got on the board at the 39:16 mark as freshman Nick Gutlove (Canton, Ohio/IMG Academy (Fla.)) scored on a header off a corner kick triggered by freshman Alberto Zaragoza (New Carlisle, Ohio/Tecumseh). The Polar Bears evened the score 3:23 into the second half on a goal by Austin Horton and then came up with the game-winner at the 73-minute mark.

Gutlove led Wittenberg with two shots in the game, while sophomore Matthew Bayler (Brownsburg, Ind./Cardinal Ritter) and junior Patrick Szymczak (Westerville, Ohio/South) were credited with the others. The Tigers were outshot 24-4 in the game, and the Polar Bears attempted a whopping 14 corner kicks, compared to four for Wittenberg.

Freshman Jack Snider (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) was stellar with six saves in the loss.
