OBERLIN, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers kicked off the 2014 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) schedule with a 2-1 road loss at Oberlin.
Wittenberg dropped to 5-4-1 overall with the loss, while Oberlin improved to 4-3. It was the league opener for both teams.
Oberlin opened the scoring in the 17th minute off a corner kick, but the Tigers came up with an equalizer just 30 seconds before halftime. Freshman Alexandre Veuthey (Geneva, Switzerland) finished a cross from senior Brian Boutin (Mount Vernon, Ohio/Mount Vernon) to send the two teams into the locker room knotted at 1-1.
The Yeomen broke the tie on a breakaway in the 60th minute and then battened down the hatches on defense to secure the victory. Oberlin held a 24-10 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Sophomore Patrick Szymczak (Westerville, Ohio/South) led the Tigers with three shots in the game.
Defensively, senior James Van Artsdalen (Riverwoods, Ill./Deerfield) was credited with nine saves.
