SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - In what was arguably the conference game of the night for men's soccer in the North Coast Athletic Conference, Kenyon and Wittenberg left fans wondering who the better team is following a two-overtime draw. Defense won out on both sides as neither team scored in any period.
Tension rose with every passing minute, as indicated by a whopping 32 fouls between the two teams, with an additional five penalty cards drawn throughout the match. Wittenberg held a shot advantage, managing 10 on the evening, while Kenyon only kicked six. The Tigers only put two of their shots on goal against the Lords' three.
The pace of the game was decidedly defensive, as every offensive opportunity for either team was interrupted by the opposing defensive corps. For Wittenberg, that unit was led by great play from Justin Jenkins (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman), with help from forward Anthony Cain (Hillard, Ohio/Darby), who always seemed to be in the backfield just when he was needed.
Joe Zeller (Springfield, Ohio/North) led the Tigers on the offensive end with four shots, while only Matt Borland (Kettering, Ohio/Alter) and Matt Fleissner (Fanwood, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) were able to put any on goal. Senior netminder Ben McAnnis-Entenman (Portland, Ore./Cleveland) put up three great saves in keeping Kenyon off the scoreboard.
Conference play continues through the end of the regular season, with the men next traveling to Oberlin on Oct. 13, for a 2:00 p.m. start time.
