Wittenberg Falls To Denison
The Wittenberg men's soccer team started the season without much offense, founded for a short time while building a 4-1 record in the North Coast Athetic Conference, but it is missing in action once again. The Tigers were shut out for a third straight game on Tuesday at Denison, this time by a 3-0 count.
GRANVILLE, Ohio - The Wittenberg men's soccer team started the season without much offense, founded for a short time while building a 4-1 record in the North Coast Athetic Conference, but it is missing in action once again. The Tigers were shut out for a third straight game on Tuesday at Denison, this time by a 3-0 count.
Unlike the previous two shutout losses, in which the Tigers lost by 1-0 scores in overtime, this one was decided much earlier. Denison picked up a first-half goal, which forced the desperate Tigers to push up into the offensive half more than usual in an attempt to keep their hopes for the postseason alive. In the second half, Wittenberg still didn't generate much offensive push, and Denison took advantage of increased advantages to score two more goals and put the game out of reach.
Freshman goalkeeper Ben McAnnis-Entenman made three saves for the Tigers while facing 16 Denison shots, compared to seven for Wittenberg. The Tigers dropped to 7-10 overall and 4-4 in the NCAC heading into Saturday's make-or-break game at league-leading Wooster. The Scots are unbeaten at 7-0 and have clinched a spot in the NCAC Tournament. Wittenberg must win and hope for help from other sources to make the tourney, which includes only the top four teams in the final regular season standings. Wittenberg has never made the NCAC Tournament in its four-year history.
