Tigers Place Eighth in Loaded North Carolina Tourney
GREENSBORO, NC - Taking on a 20-team field that included multiple top ranked teams, including five of the latest top 20, at the prestigious O'Briant Jensen Memorial Invitational, Wittenberg Men's Golf put together a solid first-round team score of 312 (+21) in challenging weather conditions, good for a tie for eighth place. The inclement weather only intensified overnight, however, forcing a cancellation of Round 2 and ending the fall portion of the Tigers' 2025-26 schedule a day earlier than anticipated.
Top-ranked Huntingdon took home the championship, finishing with a score of 295 (+11), followed by defending national champion Methodist, currently ranked 10th, at 18-over-par in the event's lone round with a score of 302, and 33rd-ranked Lynchburg with a 304 (+20). Wittenberg, which was coming off a first-place finish in the Jeff Roope Invitational on Tuesday, Oct. 21, is ranked ninth in the latest NCAA Division III rankings calculated by Scoreboard.
In a field of 110 golfers, Wittenberg was paced by sophomore Mitch Bolte (Newark, OH / Newark) with a fifth place finish overall after carding matching scores of 37 on both the front and back nine for a 74 (+3) at The Cardinal by Pete Dye, which was playing to par-71 at 6,866 yards. Mikey Schutte (Cincinnati, OH / Elder) was the next finisher for the Tigers, shooting a 76 (+5), which was good enough for 21st in the field. He was the only Wittenberg golfer to record an eagle during the opening round.
The next three golfers for the Tigers all finished tied for 65th as Mark Sulek (Delaware, OH / Hayes), David Walterhouse (Statham, GA / Bethlehem Christian Academy) and Griffin Turner (Enon, OH / Greenon) each ended with a score of 81 to stand 10-over par.
The Tiger men's golf team will not compete again until March 2026. Wittenberg will kick off the spring portion of the 2025-26 season March 2-3 with a trip to Savannah, Georgia. Some team members will compete in the Savannah Invitational, while others will participate in the Port City Invitational. Both events are hosted by Berry College.
