Tiger Men's Basketball Completes 2-0 Start With Win Over Bob Jones
Sewanee, Tennessee - After scoring just 19 points in the first half against Bob Jones University, the Wittenberg Tigers found their offensive groove at just the right time. Playing their second game in as many days at the Lon Varnell Classic at Sewanee University, the Tigers shot 56 percent in the second half and 54 percent from three-point range en route to a hard-fought 66-58 victory.
The win came less than 24 hours after Wittenberg opened the season with a 75-50 victory over Covenant, and it gave the Tigers a 2-0 start to the 2023-24 campaign. Wittenberg returns to Springfield to open the home portion of the season on Tuesday, November 14, against Wilmington.
Wittenberg trailed 23-19 at halftime as both teams struggled offensively. The Tigers shot just 29 percent over the opening 20 minutes and Bob Jones matched that with 26 percent shooting. Wittenberg grabbed the lead six minutes into the second half on a three-pointer from junior Cameron Harrison (Eaton, Ohio/National Trail) and held on to the lead the rest of the way, despite plenty of nervy moments late in the game as Bob Jones repeatedly kept the margin to just one score.
All 10 of Harrison's shots from the field were taken from behind the three-point arc, and he hit five of them en route to an 18-point performance. That was one point behind junior Trey Killens (Cincinnati Ohio/Mason), who finished with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds, in addition to four assists.
Freshman Grayson Steury (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) added 10 important points in 17 minutes off the bench, and senior Jeff Queen (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) did some tremendous work in game-high 37 minutes of action, finishing with five points, six assists, and seven rebounds.
