Wittenberg Field Hockey Keeps Pace Atop NCAC With Win Over Wooster
SPRINGFIELD, OH - On a beautiful October Sunday afternoon, Wittenberg Field Hockey continued its winning ways as the Tigers earned another important North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) win, this time defeating the visiting Wooster Scots. The 3-0 blanking of the Scots improves Wittenberg to 11-1 on the season and 8-1 in the conference, tying the Tigers for second place with their next opponent, pre-season favorite Ohio Wesleyan.
The Tigers wasted no time getting on their offensive attack as they posted 11 combined shots in the first and second periods. However, it was the second period that proved fruitful for Wittenberg as sophomore Ebony Wyse (Lewis Center, OH/Olentangy) found the back of the cage twice. Midway through the second period Wyse scored again, this time off a feed from Victoria Pipinich (Fort Worth, TX / All Saints Episcopal), to give Wittenberg its first lead, and less than two minutes later, Wise scored again off an assist from Devyn Groves (La Grange, KY/Oldham County Senior) to give the Tigers a bit of breathing room heading into the halftime break.
Witt posted a game-high seven shots in the third period, but it was Groves in the fourth who scored her team-leading 11th goal of the season to give Wittenberg its final 3-0 margin of victory. The three-goal cushion secured Witt's win over Wooster, its first since the 2022 season.
In the dominant victory, Wittenberg outshot Wooster 21-3 and recorded eight penalty corners, while the Scots did not have any.
Defensively, seniors Caitlin Archdeacon (Saratoga, CA/Westmont) and Izzy Thompson (New Albany, OH/New Albany) split time in goal, with Archdeacon facing the lone shot on goal of the afternoon. For the Tiger defense, the win over Wooster was shutout No. 7 of the season.
Wittenberg plays its final regular season game of the season on Wednesday, October 30 as the Tigers travel to Delaware, Ohio for a huge conference match-up against OWU. The outcome of the game has regular-season conference championship implications along with seeding for the NCAC Tournament. Start time for the match is set for 7 p.m.
