SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers finished with more shots and more penalty corners, but by game's end they hadn't cashed in on any of their offensive opportunities in a 1-0 loss on a cold, damp morning in Wooster.
The loss was Wittenberg's third in a row and dropped the Tigers to 4-6 overall on the 2011 season, including a mark of 3-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). Wooster, which upended the top-seeded Tigers in the NCAC Tournament title match a year ago, improved to 6-5 overall, but more importantly the Scots now stand 5-2 in the conference.
Wittenberg was credited with 12 shots in the game, including eight in the second half alone, compared to eight total for the Scots. However, Wooster netminder Liz Plumley was up to the task, making eight saves.
The Tigers also enjoyed a huge edge in penalty corner opportunities at 13-6. But the only thing that matters is the score on the board, which reflected a 1-0 Wooster victory thanks to a goal at the 4:55 mark of the first half.
Freshman Beth Warning (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) and junior Kellen Morrissey (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) each recorded three shots in the game, while three other players finished with two shots apiece.
The Tigers return home for the first time since a 12-0 win over Trine on Sept. 21 when they host Earlham in NCAC action at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4 (Live: Watch/Listen • Stats).
