Field Hockey Joins Oberlin To Raise Funds For Cancer Research
The Wittenberg University field hockey team is in a battle for first place in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) with four games remaining in the regular season. While their focus on the field on Saturday, Oct. 23, will be the Oberlin Yeowomen, the Tigers have another battle to fight, and they need all the help they can get.
Springfield, Ohio — The Wittenberg University field hockey team is in a battle for first place in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) with four games remaining in the regular season. While their focus on the field on Saturday, Oct. 23, will be the Oberlin Yeowomen, the Tigers have another battle to fight, and they need all the help they can get.
The two teams have partnered with the National Field Hockey Coaches Association and the National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR) to host a "Stick it to Cancer" event that day. In the days leading up to the game, players from both teams are raising money online. The goal is to raise at least $1,000.
"Wittenberg University teaches its students to become engaged with the world through community service," said first-year Head Coach Kelley Hubbell. "This is a great opportunity for our student-athletes to raise money for a great cause, and I'm pleased that they have embraced the opportunity."
For nearly four decades, the NFCR has been the driving force behind many of the cancer treatments that are saving lives today, helping millions of cancer patients through research efforts made possibly by loyal financial support of individuals, donors and organizations.
Wittenberg, which won the 2009 NCAC regular season title and has a conference-best nine since joining the league in 1989, heads into today's game at Ohio Wesleyan with records of 10-3 overall and 7-1 in the NCAC. The Tigers have a one-game lead in the standings.
