OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The youthful Wittenberg Tigers knew they would have to grow up quickly in the opening weekend of the 2006 season, and some painful lessons were learned in a 4-0 loss to Rowan in the first round of the Black-Eyed Susan Tournament at Villa Julie College.
The Tigers will now play Notre Dame (Md.), a 6-0 loser to Fairleigh Dickinson in its opener, on Sunday in hopes of picking up their first win. Rowan, which was ranked No. 5 at the end of the 2005 season, will play Neumann on Sunday.
Rowan dominated from the outset, although it took a while for the scoreboard to reflect that. After 35 minutes, the Profs had only a penalty stroke goal from Danielle Miranda to show for their efforts, which included a complete shutout of the Tigers, who were unable to even direct a shot on goal in the first half.
But in the second half, Miranda scored twice more and the Profs rolled. For the game, Wittenberg was outshot 27-2. Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Umberger (Concord, NH/Derryfield School) was credited with seven saves. Seniors Katy Barrett (Powell, Ohio/Watterson) and Holly McHugh (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) had Wittenberg's shots.
