Wittenberg Shuts Down Ohio Wesleyan, 1-0
After an 0-4 start, the Wittenberg Tigers are putting things together at just the right time. With first-place Oberlin coming in for a key North Coast Athletic Conference showdown on Saturday, the Tigers prepped with a 1-0 shutout of visiting Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday.
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - After an 0-4 start, the Wittenberg Tigers are putting things together at just the right time. With first-place Oberlin coming in for a key North Coast Athletic Conference showdown on Saturday, the Tigers prepped with a 1-0 shutout of visiting Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday.
The win moved the Tigers to 4-5 overall on the season and raised their mark in the NCAC above .500 for the first time this season at 3-2. The three-time defending conference titlists recorded their third shutout of the 2005 season.
The lone goal of the game was scored in the first half by junior forward Katy Barrett off a feed from sophomore midfielder Alison Voigt. Sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Irvin made that slim lead stand up, turning away six shots, including five in the second half.
Wittenberg dominated action in the first half, accumulating 15 shots to Ohio Wesleyan's two. But in the second half, the tables were turned as OWU directed five shots on the Tiger goal, compared to four for Wittenberg, and controlled much of the action. The Tigers held a 7-2 first-half advantage in penalty corners, while OWU held the lead in that category in the second half by a whopping 8-1 margin.
