Wittenberg Stops Oberlin To Take Sole Possession of First Place
The Wittenberg Tigers took over sole possession of first place in the North Coast Athletic Conference on Friday night, stopping the visiting Oberlin Yeowomen 2-1 on the turf at Edwards-Maurer Field. The win improved the Tigers to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the NCAC, tops in the conference, while Oberlin fell a game back in the standings.
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers took over sole possession of first place in the North Coast Athletic Conference on Friday night, stopping the visiting Oberlin Yeowomen 2-1 on the turf at Edwards-Maurer Field. The win improved the Tigers to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the NCAC, tops in the conference, while Oberlin fell a game back in the standings.
Wittenberg opened the scoring in the first half with a beautifully executed play. At the 12-minute mark, sophomore Katy Barrett found the back of the cage off a pass from senior Blair Ufer.
Twenty-two minutes into the second half, the Tigers took a 2-0 lead after struggling to clear the ball out of their own end for much of the half. Sophomore Holly McHugh rammed home a long shot off a penalty corner, with the assist going to senior Carrie Happ, for a key insurance score. Oberlin got one goal back with about seven minutes remaining, but the Tigers were able to stave off the comeback and capture the win.
Tigers freshman goaltender Nicole Irvin came up with the big stops again, recording five saves to capture the win. The Tigers are back in action Saturday against Centre in non-conference action. The game starts at 6 p.m.
