Wittenberg Football Set To Rekindle Baldwin Wallace Series In 2024
Springfield, OH – Slated for the fall of 2024 and 2025 the Wittenberg Tiger football team will be slated to take on the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets. The first meeting will take place 25 years since the two sides last faced-off, rekindling the old Ohio Athletic Conference rivalry.
"In the history of Division III football, the Wittenberg vs. Baldwin Wallace rivalry was as big as it gets," said Head Coach Jim Collins. "Renewing this storied tradition will not only be a special experience for our present student athletes but will also ignite fond memories in the men who made this matchup legendary."
The last time the Tigers and Yellow Jackets were pitted against each other on the gridiron was for the season-opener of the 1999 season. Wittenberg took down Baldwin Wallace by a final score of 21-16 from Edwards-Maurer Field, as the Red and White went on to complete an undefeated regular season. The Tigers went on to make their 8th appearance in the NCAA Division III playoffs that season, defeating Alma College in the first round 42-19 from Edwards-Maurer Field.
"Wittenberg University, our football program and alumni are excited about continuing one of the fiercest rivalries in college football," said VP/AD Brian Agler. "There have been many football games between Wittenberg and Baldwin Wallace where the result determined the champion."
Wittenberg and Baldwin Wallace first squared off in 1896, shutting out the Yellow Jackets 22-0. In the historic Ohio small-college rivalry, Wittenberg maintains the series advantage, 21-20-1. Between 1917 and 1988, when the two sides were pitted against each other in conference match-ups Wittenberg owned a 13-6 record against Baldwin Wallace.
