Wittenberg Football Overwhelms Oberlin
Oberlin, OH – The Wittenberg Tiger football team evened their record at 3-3 and 3-2 in North Coast Athletic Conference action, with a 44-27 win over the Oberlin College Yeomen. The Tigers came alive late in each of the two halves, scoring 21 points in the second quarter and 14 points in the fourth. The Tiger offense tallied 414 yards of total offense, with the Wittenberg run game picking up significant yards, as Garrett Gross racked up 228 yards on 19 carries including three touchdowns. The Wittenberg defense came away with two takeaways of their own, with Jordan Burkey and Cameron Snurr each coming up with an interception of the Oberlin offense. Burkey and Snurr would lead the Tiger defense with eight tackles apiece. Six different Tigers recorded tackles for a loss against the Yeomen, including Mike Knock and Grant Hollinger who found their way into the Oberlin backfield twice each, setting Oberlin back 25 yards.
Game Breakdown
Wittenberg opened the scoring just two minutes into the second quarter with Drew Sterett capping off the 80-yard drive, putting the Tigers on the board for their first score of the game. Gross took his first score of the game in midway through the second quarter, extending the Wittenberg lead to 14-0, going 33-yards for the Tiger touchdown. Gross would put one more Tiger touchdown on the board before the half, going 26-yards capping off the four play 73-yard scoring drive. After the Wittenberg defense came up with the safety near the end of the third, Snurr returned his interception 28-yards to put the Tigers ahead 30-21. The Tigers controlled the fourth quarter with Wittenberg taking the kickoff return 88-yards to extend their lead to ten points at 37-27. Gross tallied his final touchdown of the day taking an 87-yard run to the house, finalizing the Wittenberg win, 44-27.
