Tigers Topple Terriers In NCAC Opener
Springfield, OH – The Wittenberg University football team returned to action from Edwards-Maurer Field, downing the Hiram College Terriers by way of a 51-21 decision. The Tigers wasted no time letting their offense loose in the first half, jumping out to a 37-0 lead at the half. Wittenberg amassed over 450-yards of total offense, averaging 7.3 yards per play. Senior quarterback Bobby Froehlich returned under center, completing an efficient 15 of 18 passes for 200 yards, including two-touchdowns. The Tiger defense sent a message in their NCAC opener, recording 10 tackles for a loss, setting the Terriers back 74-yards on the day. Mike Knock led the defensive unit up front with six takedowns on the day, including two and a half sacks, getting in on one more tackle for a loss. Michael Fiessinger led the Tiger defense with five solo tackles, breaking up two passes.
The Breakdown
Bryce Anderson broke open the scoring for the Tigers on the first drive of the game, ripping off a 24-yard scoring run to put the Red and White ahead, less than three-minutes into the action. After a field goal from Brandon Goodwin, LaShon Bright took advantage of a short field after a Terrier turnover, punching in the three-yard touchdown run. Reed Hall scored his first collegiate touchdown for the Tigers, pushing the Wittenberg lead out to 24-0 to start the second quarter. Froehlich connected with Sam Kayser for the Tigers first touchdown of the game coming through the air for five yards. Jake Saus tallied his second touchdown of the season with the 16-yard reception from Froehlich, capping off a seven play 63-yard scoring drive to highlight the third-quarter for the Red and White. Hall rounded out the scoring plays for the Tigers with a six-yard dive into the endzone, as the Wittenberg offense put together a 10 player 75-yard drive, eating up over six-minutes of clock.
