Wittenberg Football Fends Off DePauw

Greencastle, IN – The Wittenberg University football team hit the road, and fended off another tough NCAC opponent, topping the Tigers from DePauw University 17-10. Wittenberg took a 14-3 lead into the break, as the two sides put up a defensive front in the third with neither team allowing any points to go on the board. Wittenberg racked up 378 total yards of offense on the afternoon, averaging 5.6 yards per play. Bobby Froehlich completed 20 of 28 passes for 240 yards with two touchdowns and just one interception on the afternoon. The Tiger defense stood strong once again, as Troy Jones took an interception back for 31-yards putting a stop to the final DePauw drive and helping seal the Wittenberg win. With this win, Wittenberg moves to 3-1 on the season and 3-0 in NCAC action.

Game Breakdown

DeShawn Sarley opened up the Tiger scoring effort on the opening drive with 8:14 left in the first quarter, capping off a six-yard catch and run for the Wittenberg touchdown. DePauw closed out the first quarter putting their first points on the board, converting on a 42-yard field goal. Tristan Davis took in a 33-yard touchdown pass from Froehlich with just over a minute remaining in the first half, giving the Red and White the 14-3 advantage. After a defensive standstill in the third quarter, DePauw score their only touchdown of the game with just under ten minutes in the game. a 32-yard field goal by Christian Seger helped seal the Wittenberg win. Jonathan Seay led the Tiger defense with 9 tackles. Nasir Carter followed close behind, adding seven of his own, including an assisted tackle for a two-yard DePauw stop. Jordan Burkey locked down the defensive backfield, tacking on six tackles to go along with two pass breakups. Wittenberg held DePauw to less than 240 yards of total offense on the day, including just 94 yards on the ground on 31 rush attempts.


Wittenberg will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 12 hosting Allegheny College for Community Day. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM. Community Day events begin at 11:00 AM.
