Wittenberg Names Mitchell Griffiths Baseball Head Coach
SPRINGFIELD, OH - Following a tremendously successful 2025 season leading the Wittenberg University baseball program as its interim head coach, Mitchell Griffiths has been selected as the 11th head coach in program history, Vice President and Director of Athletics and Recreation Brian Agler announced.
"We are excited about Mitchell officially taking over the lead of our baseball program," Agler said. "He took over this year on short notice and did a really good job. Following the season, he had multiple endorsements from the student-athletes and parents. We feel Mitchell can keep building this program, and we are looking forward to the future."
Griffiths joined the Wittenberg University baseball staff prior to the 2022-23 season as an assistant coach. After two seasons as the program's recruiting coordinator and pitching coach, Griffiths took over as the team's interim head coach in January 2025 and led the Tigers to a tremendous 29-win campaign. Wittenberg finished 11-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) and won a game in the NCAC Tournament before placing eight players on the All-NCAC honor roll. Four players went on to earn all-region awards after the season as well.
Griffiths has led the Tiger pitching staff to numerous records in his three years on staff, and the Tigers have also broken numerous offensive records during the 2025 season, including the team's season strikeout record (313) and season home run record (51). Wittenberg has reached the NCAC Tournament in each of Griffiths' three seasons on the coaching staff, and the Tigers have placed at least eight players on the All-NCAC honor roll following each season. The 2023 squad set program records with 32 wins and a 15-game winning streak, and Wittenberg won a share of its first-ever NCAC regular season title and also advanced to the NCAC Tournament championship game the following year.
"I would like to thank Brian Agler for the opportunity to continue to lead the Wittenberg program," Griffiths said. "My three years at Wittenberg have been nothing but special, and I look forward to being able to lead the program to new heights in the future. Wittenberg has a tremendous reputation for success, and our coaches and players look forward to the challenge of adding to that in the future."
Griffiths joined Wittenberg's coaching staff after two seasons at NCAA Division II Coker University (S.C). Before that, Griffiths spent one season on staff at Adrian College. During the COVID-19 shortened season at Adrian, the team's pitchers carried a 3.26 ERA with 91 strikeouts compared to just 46 walks in 77.1 innings. Griffiths also coached Mo Hanley, a 13th-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Angels in 2021, during his tenure at Adrian. While on staff at Coker, Griffiths helped the Cobras set the team record for single-season strikeouts by more than 70.
Griffiths, who holds both Rapsodo and Driveline program certifications, started his coaching career with one year at NCAA Division II Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio, as a graduate assistant coach.
A Columbus, Ohio native, Griffiths played for four years at NCAA Division II Alderson Broaddus University in Philippi, W.V. He was a sophomore member of the 2016 Great Midwest Athletic Conference championship team that qualified for the Midwest Regional, as Alderson Broaddus posted records of 31-21 overall and 14-8 in the league. Griffiths graduated as the program's career record-holder in pitching appearances at 56. He finished with a 4-7 career record with five saves.
Griffiths earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Alderson Broaddus in 2018 and a master's in business administration from Walsh.
