Springfield, OH - Wittenberg has been hot lately, coming into the series with Ohio Wesleyan after five consecutive wins. Following a Senior Recognition Day sweep of visiting Ohio Wesleyan by scores of 14-8 and 9-6, the Tigers' third North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) twin killing of this season, Wittenberg's winning streak has stretched to seven in a row.
Prior to the start of Game 1, this year's seniors and graduate students were honored. Seniors Ben Seibert (Cincinnati, OH/LaSalle), Jalen Williams (Catonsville, MD/Western Tech), Kyle Mahon (Dayton, OH/Centerville), Charlie Schafer (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek), Josh Bobey (Medina, OH/Medina), Nate Floyd (Akron, OH/Copley), Rocco Royer (Lake Bluff, IL/Lake Forest), Owen Treece (Van Wert, OH/Van Wert), and Colin Maynard (Pickerington, OH/Pickerington Central) were honored, along with graduate students Luke Thomas (Tallmadge, OH/Tallmadge) and Parker Gryskevich (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg).
In the opener of the two-game set, junior Andrew Rust (Dublin, OH/Dublin Coffman) was the starter for the Tigers. Rust went 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on three hits and four walks while striking out three. In relief for the Tigers were freshman Chris Dawson (Loveland, OH/Milford) and senior Kyle Mahon (Dayton, OH/Centerville). Dawson was credited with the win in game one, moving his record to 2-1 on the season, and Mahon was given the save, his second on the year. The Tiger bats did the job again as the Tigers pushed across 14 runs in the game, highlighted by a three-run homer by senior Rocco Royer (Lake Bluff, IL/Lake Forest) in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Alex Nemunaitis (Perrysburg, OH/Ottawa Hills) was the only Tiger to have multiple hits in the game with two, and he also accounted for three RBIs in the game.
In game two, the starter for the Tigers was none other than senior Nate Floyd (Akron, OH/Copley). Floyd's pitching was stellar, as he allowed just three runs in his six innings of work. Sophomore Ben Sells (Urbana, OH/Graham) and senior Owen Treece (Van Wert, OH/Van Wert) both pitched in relief of Floyd, with Sells allowing 2 runs over 1.2 innings pitched, and Treece going the remaining 1.1 innings, allowing no hits and striking out two. Floyd was given the win in the game, moving his record to 4-0 on the year, and Treece was given the save, his first this season and also his first of his career. The bats were hot again as home runs by junior Tommy Chilicki (Lewis Center, OH/Olentangy) and sophomore Thatcher Dietz (Westerville, OH/Westerville South) helped plate nine runs in the win. Dietz hit two home runs in the game, moving his season total to six.
With the sweep of Ohio Wesleyan, the Tigers improved to 25-8 overall on the season and 9-3 in the NCAC. The Tigers, who are now firmly in the top four of the league standings with four games to play, return to action Sunday, April 27, against Ohio Northern in a non-conference matchup that will have a big impact on the regional rankings. First pitch at Carleton Davidson Stadium is set for 2:00 p.m.
