Wittenberg overcame a five run Quaker inning early on, but could not hold on to a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning on Wednesday.

RICHMOND, Indiana—Wittenberg baseball traveled to Earlham College to partake in their first midweek contest of the 2017 campaign, as the Quakers and Tigers combined for 19 runs in the nine inning affair. Despite taking a lead into the ninth inning, the Tigers could not stop the Quakers from mounting a comeback, as Wittenberg suffered a walk-off loss, 10-9.

SCORING BREAKDOWN

Top 2ND

  • Freshman shortstop Ryan Probst broke the seal for the Tigers, plating Dalton Boucher on a single up the middle, as the Tigers trailed 2-1.
  • Knotting the game up at 2-2 was Jace Barga, who grounded out to second-base, scoring junior first-basemen Timmy Bates.

Top 4th

  • The Tigers took the lead for the first time in the top of the fourth inning, as sophomore outfielder Matt Baker laced a single to the outfield to score Probst.

Top 6th

  • The Tigers dug back in at the plate in the top of the sixth after giving up a five run bottom of the fifth to Earlham, as Barga picked up his second RBI of the game with a single that plated Bates.
  • After Baker reached first on an error by the Quaker shortstop, Aaron Fasano and Probst came all the way around to score for the Tigers, cutting the Quaker lead to 7-6.
  • Capping off the four-run frame was senior infielder Josh Kaplan, who managed to pick up an RBI in the form of Barga, despite grounding into a double-play.

Top 7th

  • The Tigers regained the lead in the top of the seventh as Fasano singled to the outfield, drawing a wild relay throw, plating Boucher.
  • Wittenberg tacked on one more run in the seventh, as Barga recorded his third RBI of the game, scoring Fasano.
