Tigers Upended By Ohio Northern 7-2
In a match that was much closer than the final score would indicate, Wittenberg came out on the short end against the Polar Bears.
LIMA, Ohio – The Wittenberg men's tennis team dropped its first match since returning to the Buckeye State, moving indoors due to the weather before falling to Ohio Northern by a 7-2 score.
The loss dropped the Tigers, who were coming off a 4-1 performance during their annual Spring Break trip to Hilton Head, to 9-2 on the 2012-13 season. Ohio Northern evened its record at 4-4.
The key to the unexpectedly lop-sided decision was a doubles sweep by the Polar Bears. That set the stage for ONU to claim four of the six singles matches, with the decisive points coming in a pair of three-set decisions at the third and fourth positions.
Sophomores Sasha Topolyanskiy (Moscow, Russia) and Alexey Topolyanskiy (Moscow, Russia) were both upended in three sets, shortly after the Polar Bears secured the victory with straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. The Tigers rallied at No. 5 singles as junior Sam Wilke (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) picked up the victory and senior Sergio Fishkin (Minsk, Belarus) rounded things out with a three-set victory at No. 6.
